"Misogynoir in Digital Spaces" delves into the critical examination of the unique challenges faced by Black women in the digital realm due to the intersection of misogyny and anti-Black racism, known as misogynoir. Students will explore the historical context, manifestations, and impacts of misogynoir in online environments. Through case studies, discussions, and contemporary examples, participants will gain a deeper understanding of the experiences of Black women online and how digital platforms can both perpetuate and challenge misogynoir. This course fosters awareness, promotes critical thinking, and encourages conversations about equity and inclusion in the digital age.

Hoodrat Scholarship™ is a labor of love, an eco-system of knowledge, and my way to share what I learn with those in my community. It is a combination of merch, resources, and access to information. Whatever I have learned from the schoolhouse to the streets is now available to all because we are all worthy of knowledge.

I'm Dr. KáLyn (Kay) Coghill (they/them), an interdisciplinary scholar, award-winning activist, practitioner, and educator based in Richmond, Virginia. My work focuses on addressing online gender-based violence, and I specialize in developing innovative harm reduction strategies created by Black women and non-binary femmes in digital spaces. I identify as a Black, fat, disabled, non-binary femme who comes from a busy, small city with a rich Black history.

  • I had the privilege of working with Dr. Coghill throughout the summer 2024 and 2024-2025 academic school year to help me map out a road plan to successfully defend my dissertation by the end of March 2025. Dr. Coghill was an amazing dissertation coach. We started by working backwards form my potential defense date and making a roadmap of everything I needed to do before then which included finishing analyzing my data, writing up my results and discussion, and then time for feedback and revisions. I found this initial meeting to be extremely helpful for me to manage such a large research project without feeling overwhelmed. As I working on things, Dr. Coghill would check in via text and let me know if I needed a meeting. At one point, I even had to briefly work with them to revise my timeline due to the job market taking away a lot of time from my dissertation, but Dr. Coghill was still able to help me make a new plan that kept me on track for a March defense. I also used the dissertation planner to keep track of important dates and notes about the project as I was writing and prepping for my defense, and about a week before my defense, I did a practice session with Dr. Coghill to get feedback on the presentation, which was also extremely helpful. Overall, I was extremely satisfied with having Dr. Coghill as my dissertation coach, and with her assistance, I was able to successfully defended in March! Thank you so much.
